| With a population of 17 million, Shanghai has
a long history as a cultural capital of Asia. Since 1999
when China embarked on market reforms, Shanghai has become
the focus of incredible economic development. With the rise
of income and a burgeoning visitor population, the demand
for cultural programs has steadily increased.
AMS Planning & Research
was commissioned by the largest real estate developer in
Asia to study the feasibility of new
performing arts facilities to be located in a 60 acre mixed
use development in the heart of the historic French concession.
Over four months, the consultants conducted interviews, meetings,
and research to identify the needs of local cultural organizations,
document the potential audience, and determine interest among
international theatrical and concert producers and presenters.
|
Recommendations included a new facility to
accommodate touring Broadway musicals and smaller venues
for concerts, theater and other entertainment. Conceptual
space programs were developed and estimates were established
for the construction and operation. Planning for the project
continues with a goal to open for the Shanghai World Expo
in 2010.
